Education and training

Since 16th August 2010 Nir Shahaf has begun his fellowship in the GMPF PhD programme at FEM-IASMA. The proposed project is: “interpretation of MS-based metabolomics data for use within an automatic pipeline”, with tutors Dr. Ron Wehrens (FEM) and Dr. Asaph Aharoni (Weizmann Institute).

Nir studied computer science and bioinformatics in TelHai College, Israel, then bioinformatics and medicinal chemistry in the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Later he joined the Metabolomics field as a research assistant at the department of plant sciences in the Weizmann Institute with Dr. Aharoni’s group, applying statistical analysis to quality control of MS data. His research interests include: data analysis methods, structural bioinformatics, computational drug design and biological networks. During his academic career, Nir has set up a system to predict protein binding sites, created a computational method for targeted virtual drug design and defined novel computation profiles of RNA secondary structures. While working in the pharmaceutical industry, he generated pipelines for effective integration of in-house and commercial computational tools.
