Tax Code
The 'Codice fiscale' (or tax code) is a basic means of identifying the individual in his relations with the state and Public Government Authorities. The tax code is a social security number needed to open a bank account, register immovable property, stipulate contracts (rental, accommodation, telephone) process salary/scholarship payment, enrol in the National Health Service. Citizens can use daily services that require a mandatory indication of the tax code.
In order to obtain the tax code international guests have to submit the following documents to the Tax Office (Agenzia delle Entrate):
- a valid passport or identity document;
- signed form for the request of the tax code (available at the Agenzia delle Entrate).
The only valid codice fiscale is that issued by the Agenzia delle Entrate. No other external body is authorised to issue such a code. Apart from the local office of the Agenzia delle Entrate, the code can be issued by Town Halls (for newly born children within 60 days from the date of birth) and by Consulates (for those resident abroad), as long as they are connected telematically to the Anagrafe Tributaria.
