A new invasive insect species (Drosophila suzukii, Spotted Wing Drosophila - SWD), is threatening European fruit production. SWD originates from the Far East (Japan, Korea) and it is spreading all over the world. SWD infests unwounded ripening fruits and exhibits a wide host crop range, attacking berries, stone fruits, grapes and damaged fruits as apples, loquat, persimmons, and tomatoes. The potential of infestation rate by SWD is enormous, thanks to an extreme fecundity and short generation times. SWD has become the first management priority for soft fruits and cherry growers in the invaded countries, where huge fruit losses have been reported.

The aims of this meeting are to:

  • share data about SWD diffusion and impact in Europe
  • identify research gaps to be filled in order to develop suitable control strategies.
